The 150 fragments of the KNM-ER 1470 cranium were discovered at Koobi Fora in August 1972, and may have been one of the last fossils examined by Louis Leakey before his death1. This specimen helped to introduced the idea that more than 1 relatively large brained hominin existed in East Africa 1.9 Ma1. KNM-ER 1470 is the type specimen for Homo rudolfensis.
